This dog breed originated in the Orient and was brought to Europe in the 16th century. A toy breed, the pug is a patient and good natured dog that can be a great family companion. It is also great with kids because of its tolerance. Be careful when feeding, though, as it is prone to becoming overweight.

The Chinook is the rarest of all. A descendant of the sled dog, this breed is on the decline right after its breed founder died in 1963. In 1981, only 11 of this type of house dog were found but thanks to a group of dog lovers, the breed has been restored. Stabyhoun is another rare dog today. This is a mix of the pointer and retriever. A gundog, the Staybihound breed is being monitored by the Dutch Dog Registry. In the U.S., there are only about 100 of this type of breed.
